One thing is certain: Divide County has already faced its most difficult opponent of the season.
Cavalier, the defending state champion, scored on eight of its ten possessions Friday night, stopped only by the clock running out in each half, en route to 58-6 win in Cavalier. The Maroons (0-1) managed only 178 offensive yards against the stout Tornadoes defense.
“This wasn’t the ideal way to start the season, but we did learn a lot about our team,” Divide County offensive coach Bob Brown said. “Cavalier has a good team and showed why they are among the best in the state.”
Divide County’s only points came late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Trent Bossingham directed a six-play drive. Aidan Eriksmoen, who ran for 91 yards, finished off the drive with a 5-yard scoring run.
Three first downs on the Maroons’ first drive turned out to be the highlight of the first half for the offense.
Led by running back Austin Urlaub, the Tornadoes’ offense had its way with the Maroons during the entire 48 minutes.
Cavalier rolled up 250 yards to Divide County’s 60 on its way to a 36-point lead at halftime.
The Tornadoes scored on touchdown runs of 48, 12, 9, 31 and 17 yards by Urlaub, respective runs of 1 and 32 yards by Brady Morden and Andy Rintala and a touchdown pass of 24 yards by Ryley Cleem.
“We did not play physical and aggressive enough,” Divide County defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “Schematically, we need to make changes to put kids in better situations where they can be successful.”
The Tornadoes scored on their second offensive play of the game when Urlaub ran for a 48-yard touchdown at the 11:18 mark in the first quarter. After Divide County punted on the ensuing possession, Urlaub reached the end zone again – this time for 12 yards – for a 16-0 Cavalier lead with 2:12 left in the first.
Cavalier went ahead 24-0 on a 24-yard TD pass from Cleem to Cody Walton with 10:15 left in the second quarter. Urlaub added two touchdown runs during the second quarter.
The game marked the first time in school history Divide County played Cavalier.
Eriksmoen led all DC defenders with six tackles. Noah Lorentz added five tackles for the Maroons.
Divide County finished with 169 yards on 32 rushing attempts. Bossingham was 2 of 5 passing for 9 yards, but was intercepted twice.
The Maroons host Trenton-Trinity Christian (0-1) on Friday. Kickoff at Cal Andrist Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“Trenton-TC is coming to town Friday with a lot of speed and athleticism,” Nelson said.
“We need to get better this week and find a way to stay competitive with Trenton,” Brown said. “They have some great speed, and that is an area of concern for us. We will need to take care of the football and be sound in our assignments.”
