Burke County eliminates Divide County, 60-42

No. 7 seed Divide County couldn’t keep up in a 60-42 loss to the No. 6 seed Burke County Titans in the loser-out round of the District 16 boys’ basketball tournament Saturday at Tioga.
Burke County, who swept the Maroons in the regular season, advanced to a region qualifier game to play No. 4 seed Tioga on Monday.
“We weren’t ready to play,” DC head coach Rodney Johnson said. “We just thought we were going to get the win without actually being mentally ready to play.”
Divide County (2-19) never led. Burke County was in front 26-14 at halftime.
After Jake Bird opened up the second half with a 2-point shot, Burke County responded with an 11-0 run. Joshua Kihle and Matthew Hinds led that run and scored 22 and 18 points on the night, respectively, to lead the Titans.
Divide County didn’t give up, though, and fought back with a 16-5 run led by Tyler Deering, who nailed two free throws to drive DC within 52-42 with 1:16 left. Deering posted 11 points. Burke County went on an 8-0 run to put the game to rest.
“Burke played very well,” Johnson said. “I’ve got to give them credit. They wanted to win, and they played like they wanted to win, and they got the win.”
The Titans finished the game shooting 38 percent of their shots, compared to only 27 percent for the Maroons.
Bird led Divide County with 14 points on the night.
