Makenzie Olson scored the game-winning goal 47 seconds into the third period to lift the Crosby girls’ 19U hockey team to a 6-4 win against the Breckenridge-Wahpeton Blades at Andrist Arena on Saturday.
Crosby (6-3-1) got goals from five different players. Katelynn Power-Akers, Ashlyn Bailey, A.J. Larson and Samantha DeJardine also scored for the Comets.
Olson’s 23rd goal of the season came on a breakaway with an assist from Bailey.
DeJardine added an empty-net goal with 1:35 remaining.
The Blades rallied from a one-goal deficit late in the second period to tie the game, 4-4.
"Wahpeton definitely came to play," Comets head coach Keith Olson said. "They have a couple of outstanding players who are good on the rush and have above-average shots and can create their own opportunities. We were somewhat slow to cover and, after playing three strong games last week, did not play at the same level."
Bailey pulled the Comets even at 3-3 at 10:27 of the second period. She tipped in a shot from Makenzie Olson to score her seventh of the season. Larson gave the Comets the lead at 15:00 with help from Power-Akers.
MaKenzie Knudson had 14 saves for the Comets, who will visit the Watford City Oilers on Saturday and the Richland Rangers on Sunday. Megan Meyer had 28 saves for the Blades.
"We did do a good job limiting shots," Keith Olson said, "and we did move the points around a bit more than usual, which we can hope is a good omen for this coming weekend. Watford and Richland will make for the toughest weekend yet."
