19U falls to top teams

The Richland Rangers scored two crucial shorthanded goals in the third period during a 5-1 victory against the Crosby Comets in girls’ 19U action at Andrist Arena on Sunday.
The Rangers outshot Crosby 46-13.
“We closed it to 3-1 halfway through the third but just ran out of gas after four games where we had to work our tails off,” Comets head coach Keith Olson said.
Makenzie Olson scored the lone goal for the Comets. Crosby goaltenders MaKenzie Knudson and Zada Ballew made 16 and 25 saves, respectively; Ballew entered in the second period.
Richland is in second place in the league standings behind undefeated Bismarck, who defeated the Comets a day earlier, 8-5. Crosby’s five goals were the most the Capitals have allowed in a league game this season.
“Bismarck was a really fun game,” Keith Olson said. “When we got it to 6-5, we had all the momentum, but they are really deep and were able to get a couple at the very end. I was really proud of the fight and the comeback.”
Bismarck grabbed leads of 5-1 and 6-3, but Makenzie Olson scored twice in the third period to make it 6-5 before two Bismarck goals in the final three minutes.
Addy Eriksmoen added a goal and assist, while Samantha DeJardine had one assist.
Senior Natasha DeJardine also one-timed a pass from Makenzie Olson for a key goal against Bismarck in the first minute of the third period that made the score 5-3.
Earlier in the day, DeJardine netted six goals in a 12-1 defeat of Langdon.
“I was expecting a closer game,” Keith Olson said. “We got going early and played an overall solid game. We moved the puck better and got a couple of breaks and strange bounce goals, which we never do.”
Also earning points against Langdon were Olson (four goals, three assists), Eriksmoen (two goals, three assists), and Samantha DeJardine, Ashlyn Bailey and Kyrian Johnson (two assists each). Knudson saved 17 of 18 shots.
The Comets also defeated Walsh County 8-0 on Friday behind four third-period goals.
“One of our slowest starts of the year,” Keith Olson said. “Only took a 1-0 lead into the break. Although the shots were OK, we just couldn’t get going.”
Makenzie Olson had a hat trick and two assists, and Autumn Ballew added one of each. Bailey scored twice, and Eriksmoen and Natasha DeJardine each added one. Hailey Landsverk contributed two third-period assists for her seventh and eighth points of the season.
Knudson had a 10-save shutout against Walsh County three days after a heroic effort in net Feb. 16 at Bottineau: The Stars outshot Crosby 68-12 but were only tied 2-2 heading into overtime before finally scoring the game-winner.
“They really took it to us on the shot side of the equation, and we did not get many but made ours count,” Keith Olson said. “We made a great comeback, but killing off a five-minute penalty in OT wore us out, and a freak collision let the puck squirt in with a minute left in OT. I thought we played a great third and really had them on the ropes a few times.”
Olson scored two third-period goals for Crosby to erase a 2-0 deficit. Bailey added an assist.
A make-up home game Tuesday against Williston was after press time.
