Standing at the end of Main Street, the Divide County Courthouse appears like the visual roots of Crosby. At least Joan Kading thinks so.
“I was born here,” she said. “Mother and I left when I was 6 weeks old.”
A self-described “war baby,” Kading said once she was old enough to travel, she and her mother, the former Myrtle Granrud, went to Sioux Falls, where her father, Vern Johnson, was stationed. Following his discharge from the service, the family moved to Everett, Wash.
“I spent summers here, with my grandparents and cousins,” Kading said. “If my father came along, we drove, and if not, we rode the train.”
